Sports Worldview

Countries all around the world place sports on their own pedestal and make professional sports players national celebrities. People seem to worship them, with certain events garnering millions upon millions of viewers. While they seem similar in this aspect, each country differs when it comes to popular sports. However, sports have incorporated themselves into the culture of each country.  In America, there is no doubt that football is the national sport of the country. According to the Hollywood reporter, 114.1 Million people tuned into the 2019 Superbowl alone. Additionally, it is considered one of the highest honors in music to perform during the game’s halftime show. According to Business Insider, football’s highest player, Eli Manning, earned $252.3 million. If business are willing to invest over a quarter of a billion dollars into one player, the game must hold a lot of value in America. However, in other countries, such as Columbia, football is unheard of. Like the rest ...

Sports Personalities

I have never been the biggest sports fan. Sure, I can see how people find watching them entertaining, but I’ve never quite caught on to what makes you a fan versus just a viewer. So when it comes to watching sports, I usually end up watching the other people in the room and laughing at their ridiculous reactions. I’ve noticed that sports fans tend not to sort themselves into distinct categories, but rather they exist on a spectrum that spans from least to most intense love for their team.  People who are on the lower side of this spectrum tend to care less about the game. Sure, they stay invested, but they sit more relaxed, settling into their seats. They also check their phone often and easily get distracted from the game. But they are still there to watch the game, and thus they still invest themselves in it. They know what’s going on, and they cheer on their team. They might not know much about the game, but they still enjoy watching it. But, this is just the bottom of the s...

Teams

I have been on a multitude of teams throughout my life. The first being soccer, which I started at around 6, but after the 3rd Grade, I lost interest in it. The next was a Destination Imagination team, which I found a bit more interest in, but around 7th grade, I grew out of it. Luckily, I entered Nagel theatre in 7th grade. Here, I first saw interest in a team that I wanted to be in, which was the tech crew. So, when I came to Turpin as a freshman, I jumped at the opportunity to be on Build Crew, and I've considered it to be a team ever since. In Build Crew, all of the members work together to reach one goal: create the set for the upcoming show. This common goal is what brings us together as a team. Unlike most teams, we don’t compete against others in order to reach our final goal. We compete against time because we need to finish the set before the show opens. In order to get work done effectively, we often split up into smaller groups, each taking a project. The groups are ...

Power of words

Throughout history, society has used language as a means of communicating our ideas and motivations. As languages grew and developed, cultures grew with and around them, and they became produced vibrant and exotic. Now, there are thousands of languages, and with them thousands of different cultures. Furthermore, modern advances in communication allow people to communicate across the globe and learn about the unique cultures of others. However, these advances also have had a very negative effect on society. On the internet, harsh and hateful language thrives because of a lack of responsibility and the fear of being singled out.  Social media is something that many use every day. It provides us with a fast, instant connection that can be accessed almost anywhere, at any time. Unlike face-to-face conversation, social media allows one to share their ideas and opinions without seeing how their words affect others. As such, people tend to speak without thinking, and they don’t feel a...

Pet Peeves but its a mess

When it comes to conversation, I’m not really much of a grammar Nazi. Sure I’ll poke fun at people for using the wrong your, but I’m not one to be bothered by little nuances. In my day to day life, I mean. However, when it comes to working in customer service, my “English” changes, and so does everyone else who has a job in that field. Customer service members have to speak in a perfect, unoffending language that can seem impossible to always keep up in.  When I am working at the zoo, I represent the whole zoo itself. So, I have to speak, act, and dress in the best way possible. Part of this is a strict vocabulary that I am expected to follow. When speaking to guests, certain words become taboo, and I am not allowed to say them under any circumstances. “Cage” becomes “habitat”, “toys” become “enrichment”, and even words such as “pet” become “touch”. These changes in vocabulary exist at stores and workplaces around the world. They exist for a good reason though, as they make thi...

The death of a celebrity through the eyes of someone who never watched basketball.

I have never, and most likely will never, been an avid viewer of basketball (or any sport for that matter). It’s not that I dislike the sport, I just never understood how one could sit and watch other people play for hours and be entertained. So, when I heard about the death of Kobe Bryant, I ignored it, and I kept scrolling down on Twitter. But I continued to see his face, no matter how far I scrolled. As I saw how many people cared about him, about their hero, I wondered: “What differs a celebrity from a hero, and why should this impact me?” Over the past week, I have been able to answer those questions, and I found the answers to be quite surprising.  Sure, I knew of Kobe before I saw the headlines on Sunday morning. I had heard his name on the television in my parents’ room, seen people yell “Kobe!” before shooting a paper ball into the trash can (and inevitably missing), and occasionally I’d catch a glimpse of the number 8 on the back of a jersey. But I had no idea how mu...

Pop Culture Time!!!

Today, Social media is an integral part of society. New platforms, such as TikTok, seem to appear overnight, and suddenly have millions and millions of users. TikTok is a platform where people can share short videos—most of which are usually comedic —about any topic. Just like all other forms of pop culture, TikTok provides fast and entertaining content that one can easily consume, process, and forget about. It also has many benefits and issues, some of which make it a very controversial app.  One thing about TikTok that separates it from other platforms is how it shows its users’ content. If somebody posts a video and it gains many likes out of support,, it will then be shown to more people. This system allows small users to increase their popularity on the app, and thus it gives all users with public accounts the chance to become “TikTok Famous”. Accounts who have enough followers can start to earn money from ad revenue on the app, and for a few TikTok can become a full-time ...
